The mission of the Transcona Historical Museum is to maintain and promote the history, stories and community spirit of Transcona. Through our education programs, the Transcona Historical Museum functions to raise awareness of the museum collections, promote knowledge of the history of Transcona and its residents, and maintain a sense of community pride into the future.
The Transcona Historical Museum offers a number of school programs. A donation of $25 is required for a program presentation. All of our programs are based using the Manitoba School Curriculum. All programs have elements of sensory experiences: such as hands on, audio and visual components. Programs typically take 1 hour. The current programs we offer are:
"Our Community: Then and Now"A look at the development of Transcona and the changes the community has undertaken in its almost 100 year history. The program begins with a scavenger hunt in the museums gallery followed by an in-house presentation of some of the archival photographs in the collection. A walking tour of the community is also available, please allow 30-45 additional minutes. Walking tour is dependent on weather
"Up In The Air"Get up and close at the different critters that fly. This program uses many of the specimens that the museum houses and show students the vast diversity that exists in the animal kingdom. Items from the Stephen Quelch collection such as butterflies, moths, beetles and bird eggs are showcased. At the end of this program students can identify the differences between moths and butterfly families, as well as identify various beetles. Participants also create a souvenir from their visit.
"Serving King and Country"Transcona's Hometown Heroes: Explores the experiences of a small, tightly knit railway town that was forever changes by the events of WWI and WWII. Examine the contribution of men and women from Transcona during WWI and WWII. A 15 minute video entitled "Transcona Remembers" is also available.
"From Bugs to Bloomers"A nursery school program for children under the age of 5. Combines elements of the "Our Community" and the "Up in the Air" programs but tailored to a younger audience. Includes craft activities, songs, I Spy visual games and more.
ArchaeologyA look at what archaeology is and how it's done. Also features artifacts from the Cecil Patterson collection for examination. At the end of the presentation the participants have a chance to use what they learned in identifying artifacts from the collection.
When booking:
All programs are available by appointment and are also available off site. We ask that groups book a rainy-day back up in case of inclement weather. A donation of $25 is required for each program.
